She should have seen it coming. Perhaps her time living amongst the humans had softened her. She’d be ashamed that it hadn’t taken too long at all for that to happen, if she could still feel anything at all. In retrospect, Ruby really shouldn’t have walked down that alley so late at night, even if it was a shortcut to her apartment. She also shouldn’t have brushed aside the way that man in the Diner kept glancing at her, like he knew her, but was too afraid to approach her. Strolling down the alley, satisfied after having a delicious late night dinner, she stopped when she heard a trashcan fall over. Ruby laughed at herself when she saw a stray cat dart out from behind the knocked over trashcan. Muttering to herself, Ruby couldn’t believe how skittish she was being. Just like a damn human. Tragically, that would be Ruby’s last thought before her own damn knife was shoved into her back, effectively ending her time in this vessel, and sending her straight back to the pit. Ruby would never get to see that it was the nervous man from the Diner who had done her in, nor would she have the time to ponder just how he had gotten her knife away from her. Ain’t life a bitch?

I’m in New York City to visit my sister. Unfortunately, my dear friends Bagel and Cream Cheese live here, too.
